Tallon has little or no say plus the defense is soft with 5 out of the 6 players being the same type.

Dan Spiegel: Some Truth About Gallant And His Firing
- spiegs13

The decision was made Nov 22nd but they still decided to fire him on the road in North Carolina almost a week later? It really seems to me this could have been handled so much better by the Panthers organization.

Good luck Panther fan (s).

The more I hear about this the more obvious it is that the analytics crowd was not happy with Gallant, and wasn't for a long time. After making all the changes they made last year they should have fired him and brought their own man in from the beginning.

The reaction I've heard about this from outsiders is either:

1. Gallant was a great coach and a great guy who got ripped off, being fired after a big run of points, who had to deal with injuries galore to top players. Also, Jagr is showing his age now. What a bad mistake.

2. This a great day, because an old-fashioned good old boy insider that wasn't hired as head coach for six years until last year because he wasn't good enough is being replaced by someone who is progressive, understands analytics and will transform the team 'by the numbers'.

I got news for you Panther Fan , the Cleveland Browns are doing the same thing. They went all in on the analytics side, dumped a bunch of players that were part of the previous regime that were good solid veteran players, traded down for more picks as the numbers suggest them to do, and we now have a dumpster fire at 0-12 that may be destroying one of the most well-loved franchises in the NFL for good.

I will not be surprised is this happens to the Panthers in the next two years. Have fun competing for the 1st pick in the draft.

I'm not sure I understand the firing... when it comes to analytics with sports, there's a place for both numbers and the old "gut feeling" in my opinion.

Was Gallant an anti-analytics guy? I doubt it, so let me ask you this...is the new guy more of a front office "yes man" type, than a traditional hockey guy?

I know the game is moving more to the numbers side, which can be a double-edged sword. On one hand, it's great to have a ton of info on the opponent, but at the same time, it takes the spontaneity and halts the quick decision -making that sports often rely on.

I'll use baseball (a sport completely out of control with analytics). If a situation occurs, say an opportunity to bunt, I want to go with my gut. I don't want to have to call up to the clubhouse and have some nerd tell me the percentages of how often it works and doesn't.

It'll be interesting to see what happens with this change--especially since I think a lot of teams are happy to see Gallant available.

Everyone laughed when Gudbranson got traded, dogging his ability. He might not be the best, but I bet having a more stay-at-home, big-body Defensman who can hit would be nice right now to help breakup all the puck-movers they have.

I love that you referred to the analyst as ' some nerd' cuz that's exactly what they are.

Be nice when they get this team relocated. Whether it be to Seattle or Quebec, this team is now an even bigger joke than it normally is. Analytics are ruining the game.

Soon people will only play and watch hockey so they can talk about stats.

If the decision was made to fire him after the November 22nd loss, why didn't they fire him after the November 22nd loss?

Florida is likely better off. If you're gonna go full analytics and advanced stats (as they should), then do it. Keeping Gallant, as undeserved as the firing was, is a half measure. I'm hoping my Jets embrace the advanced stats style too (like LA and Nashville), but Maurice is too stubborn to let the kids play more.

One of the softest teams in the league just got softer. And good luck with that up tempo style with Jagr as a top six forward.

The funny thing about "advanced stats" is you don't get positive analytics with out the grit and toughness to win board battles and net front battles. It's not like coaches before this spread sheet phenomenon told their teams not to get the puck.

"In 50 years in hockey I don't think I met a better person than Gerard Gallant," Tallon said in a pre-game press conference Saturday. "His passion for the game, his professionalism, his character, is impeccable and he's done a marvelous job for us."
- Dale Tallon, Jan 2, 2016 announcing Gallant's 2 year extension.

Now, less than 10 months later, they call him a cab late at night in a strange city. Like a heavy date gone bad. At least they let him have his bags.

Sorry Rueben but the Dumbest Post of the Week prize goes to you! No need to move this franchise, they are doing just fine where they are and have a very passionate fanbase. WTF is with Canadians always thinking the solution to any problem is to move a franchise north? There have been many failed franchises in the north (ex: Whalers, North Stars, original Jets, Nordiques). So why is always perceived as the "answer" north of the 49th parallel?

it's one of the things I hated about Yandle

great on paper with the analytics, the guy couldn't win a puck battle to save his life
